So I decided that my Horn Wort needed a trim. To be honest I am not 100% sure on how to properly trim Horn Wort but I figured if the stuff can increase it’s size 3 fold in less than a month if I trim it wrong how much harm could I do. So I cut the tops back a bit as they were basically taking the light from my Java Ferns. Now I will monitor the cut areas to see what the plant does.
I placed the tops in my Daughters 10 gallon tank. They are floating right now but over the weekend I will weigh them down so they look more like plants to her. Her Lace Java Fern is looking bad and if it does not improve the Horn Wort could take it’s place if it does well. Her tank is currently recovering from a bit of an algae issue so anything sucking up nutrients should be a good thing.
hi, love the blog! just to note if hornwort is what i think it is (not too good with plant names! sorry), it just regrows but with branches where you cut it, so the one stem becomes 2, then when it grows like mad (as it does!) and you snip it again you get another 2 branches unless you cut further back than before! it is quite indestructible no matter how far back you cut it, it will branch! i’ve got it in every tank and bunched to float for fry too! its great stuff!

Honestly the Horn Wort is my favorite plant right now. It grows like mad, the fish love it, and the tank looks great since I have added it.
Thank you very much for the info. I can’t wait to see how it reacts to what I have done to it. I would love to be able to just trim it back whenever I need to and add it to my other tanks, sell the extra, or what have you.
I love Horwort for my molly fry too! They continually nibble on it (or the tiny algae on it), and it grows like mad.
Hopefully all of the fry I am soon to get utilize it as a hiding place. I currently have no way of protecting them other than providing the hornwort as a hiding place.
